Liverpool Council's new Yellamundie Library has made waves locally, and now globally. Despite self-serving opposition from some, it now proudly sits as a gem on Scott Street as part of Council's Civic Place Precinct. It has received world renown as one of four finalists in an international competition to name the best new library in the world by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions [IFLA]. Yellamundie, Darug for 'storyteller', is designed to create community connections, celebrate diversity, and promote inclusion and equality. As a truly public space, it is home to an extensive and diverse catalogue of works. Up against Yellamundie are the Public Body Kaunas County Public Library in Lithuania, and two libraries in China: in Shenzhen, and Beijing. Having had a look at the competition I can safely say that Yellamundie is in with a great shot, although I may be biased. I congratulate architects fjcstudio for their innovative approach, and also want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all the library staff across Liverpool Council for their vitally important work and dedication to learning and literature.
