Joanna Alqastoma

19 September 2024

Joanna Alqastoma's story is like so many others in Liverpool. Arriving in Australia seeking a better and more peaceful life in 2021, she did not speak a word of English when she arrived. Furthermore, Joanna lost four years of education back in Iraq due to conflict. Fast forward to today, where Joanna is not only fluent in English, she ranks first at her school in history, geography, science and PDHPE. She has her sights set firmly on a university degree, and I have no doubt she will thrive in an environment where her curiosity, resilience and determination will serve her well. It was fantastic to see Joanna be recognised for her efforts, winning the Senior Academic Achievement award at the Liverpool Young Champions Awards earlier this month. Joanna has been elected to take part in several programs including the ABCN Future Thinkers Program, and the Fast Forward Program at Western Sydney University. Congratulations to Joanna on your amazing achievements, and I look forward to welcoming you to the inaugural Liverpool Youth Action Group later this month!
