Himyana Social Services

24 October 2024

I congratulate Himyana Social Services on celebrating its sixth anniversary. I joined the founder of Himyana, Shalaa Khamis, and her team for a wonderful afternoon to reflect on the support they provide to the Liverpool community. The Himyana team also took the opportunity to raise awareness in the local Iraqi community about health issues and staying safe. It was an informative gathering, with valuable insights, traditional music and a beautiful showcase of the Mandaean community of Iraq. I acknowledge the support of the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre, with CEO Maeve Brown attending, as well as Bashar Hanna of the Australian Mesopotamian Cultural Association. Shalaa started Himyana because of the experience of her late father. She noticed that after migrating to Australia he became more isolated, and so she set out to support seniors in the Iraqi community to overcome language and other barriers to regain joy and connection in their lives. Shalaa continues her work to support seniors, although she was devastated by her father's passing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Well done and thank you, Shalaa.
