Gandangara 40th Anniversary

20 November 2024

This year marks 40 years since the creation of Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council. Since their establishment following the passage of the historic Aboriginal Land Rights Act of 1983 (NSW), Gandangara has operated across six Local Government Areas: Liverpool, Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown, Parramatta, Cumberland, and the Sutherland Shire. Gandangara's central objective is to improve, protect and foster the interests of Aboriginal people in South-West Sydney. Day in and day out, I have seen the team at Gandangara do this across various areas of importance to our First Peoples and to our broader community. Gandangara has built a reputation for working to improve and incorporate Aboriginal wisdom into land management, cultural preservation, health services, transport services, and ecology practices. I am particularly proud to be sponsoring the Elders Table at the Gandangara 40th Anniversary Ball later this month. I congratulate the team at Gandangara led by CEO and Bundjalung woman Dr Melissa Williams, and the Board led by Tony Scholes – on a successful 40 years of service, and I look forward to seeing their presence thrive on the land of the Cabrogal clan of the Darug Nation for many years to come.
